Review: The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy by Suzanna de Montigny,

SUMMARY (Amazon)

A loud, hissing sound filled the air. The unicorns looked up, their eyes filled with horror.

Azaria, a unicorn colt, is intrigued when the young clairvoyant dinosaur, Darius, foresees a terrifying change in the world. When a giant fireball smashes into the earth, the unicorns struggle to survive the hurricanes and starvation that follow. Danger of a more sinister nature threatens when the creatures-that-walk-on-two-legs settle in the valley and their leader, Ishmael, discovers the healing power of the unicorns’ horns. Azaria, now a young stallion, must use his wits to save the herd from complete extinction.

So I’m not sure if I’ve read a story before where the main character isn’t a human, but it was a nice change. Unicorns and dinosaurs are an interesting mix, and Suzanne pulls it off well with this brilliant fantasy read.

It was a little hard to get into this book, but once I did I enjoyed it. It is a fast paced novel after the beginning and it was very descriptive, which I loved! There is a great message in this book, I won’t spoil it…you’re gonna have to read it to get the message!

About the author
Writer Andy Holloman has been scribbling stories since a young age. (According to reliable sources.) “Shades of Gray” is his first published novel and grew out of his experiences as a travel agency owner many moons ago. He was fascinated with the true story of a client of the business that was murdered. Suspecting her line of work was drug smuggling, a story sprouted in his over-active imagination – How far would a desperate person go to save their child and their business.
He is the father of three and happily married for 20 years. A graduate of UNC-CH, he lives in the Raleigh, NC area and is busy carpooling, keeping his wife happy, and attending his kids sporting events. He loves the great outdoors in NC, is an avid reader, and a social media goofball. Most evenings, he can be found tapping on his well-worn keyboard as he “births” his next novel.

Review: A Tale of the Other Kind: A Therian Novel by Leandi Cameron, Orangeberry Tours

SUMMARY (Amazon)

Kai Emery likes to be indiscernible; however, his infatuation for his classmate, Sienna Fynn, has made his invisibility status all the more impossible to upkeep. His world spirals out of control when he discovers that he is a shapeshifting were-leopard, and finds himself unable to control his newfound anatomy.

An unpredictable vampire enters his life, leading him down a path that soon reveals his destiny, and discloses another world, filled with magic and terrifying darkness. When he finds himself in danger from the god of magic and darkness for disobeying a curse bestowed upon his kind, forbidding him from falling in love with a human, he has to fight for survival, and protect everyone that he loves.

I loved this story so much! A shape shifting were-leopard?! How awesome! I fell in love with Kai from the beginning. Leandi did an excellent job of creating this beautifully complex and devastatingly handsome character from the beginning.

There was good pacing throughout the book. I only came across a couple of slow parts but it didn’t take away from the overall story. I loved all the characters and how well they were developed. The story itself is super unique. I much prefer reading about were-leopards than werewolves  You should definitely get this book, it’s an easy read and really fun story!

Review: An 8-track to 81 Chapters by Robin Sanders

SUMMARY (LuLu)

When a Social Studies teacher assigns a special project to six high school students, (Richard, Shelly, Nathan, Charles, Morgan and Britt) they receive a lesson that may indeed change lives of many worlds. As they work on the problems set before them they come to realize that the typical real world issues that each student had been dealing with doesn't look all that bad. As the unlikely group of misfits explores the project, they discover strengths that they were completely unaware they had.

For seven whole days they stay in a mysterious book unlocking puzzles, fighting demon-possessed statues, creating bonds with a memorable cast of characters and fighting a villain who controls the powers of the heavens. Mr. Hutchenson, a professor of social studies at St. Cardinals, is a man who plays a large part within this story, but just as the kids have to discover that, so does the reader. These six kids work on finding that strength by not only fighting the enemy, but the enemy within.

This was a very fast read for me. I enjoyed the immediate plunge into the story line. All the characters were really great. I think my favorites were Morgan and Nathan. They all were real though, and you can tell Robin Sanders really dug down deep to develop these characters and their traits.

The action is this book is captivating. I didn't find a dull spot at all. The book flowed so smooth, it was amazing. I think Robin has amazing talent and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for him!

Review: Bad JuJu by Dina Rae, Orangeberry Tours

SUMMARY (Amazon)

A Haitian bokor mentors two teens in the dark arts. Their spells backfire.

Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and meanders around the United States for decades. He settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He meets Jake and hires him for odd household jobs. As their relationship progresses, Lucien invites the boy into the world of Voodoo.

Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo lessons give him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.

Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust, leading up to dire consequences.

Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite.

Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.

WOW! Talk about a complex story line!! If I could get inside Dina Rae's head, I'm sure I would be completely blown away! This was an INCREDIBLE story from start to finish. There were so many twists and turns that I stopped trying to guess what was going on

This is my second story to read from Dina Rae (the first one is HERE,) and I was not disappointed at all (obviously huh? LOL) I loved the characters, you feel like Jake and Henry are just good boys who unfortunately met the wrong person, you know? They just want to right the wrongs that have been dealt to them, which to me, that's understandable. So while their actions aren't favorable, I found the boys themselves very likable. Lucien however, is too creepy!!

I also got the sense that Dina really did her homework with the whole Voodoo subject. It didn't seem far-fetched like some stuff I've read or watched about Voodoo. Dina Rae did a great job with this story and if you are looking for a quick paced, interesting read then get this today!!!

Review: The Consul General's Wife by Aliefka Bijlsma

SUMMARY (Amazon)

Melchior Steenbergen is leading an idyllic life. An elite member of Holland’s diplomatic corps, he is the Consul General in Rio, with a sweeping view of the Ipanema bay from his official residence, and a beautiful wife 20 years his junior. His trustworthy maid, Mercy, who is from Ghana and has followed him everywhere, attends to his every need. At 59, his time as a diplomat is winding down, but he expects to put one more feather in his cap: an ambassadorship. Paris, perhaps. Doesn't he deserve it?

But Melchior’s glorious world is a façade, a house of cards, and sharp winds are starting to blow.

The Consul General's Wife is the story of a man, elegant and dignified, unable to recognize his own flaws. Set against the mystical and unforgiving city of Rio, the novel is a comedy about a dying generation. And a tragedy about a man who has only a few days left to wake up.

This was a novel unlike anything I've read before. I found out that this was actually transcribed from Dutch which surprised me! I think the best way to describe this book would be : elegant. It had a certain air of prestige surrounding it.

Aliefka is talented with the development of characters. Melchior, Leandra (who tugs at my heartstrings!!), Nikki and Mercy were just really great in depth people that just felt so real to me while I read their story. I love when an author can pull you in and temporally make you feel that the people you're reading about are real life.

This might be considered a slow paced novel to some, but I enjoyed it immensely. The setting is just beautiful and the story itself is one worth reading.

Review: The Last Degree by Dina Rae, Orangeberry Tours

SUMMARY (Amazon)

The Last Degree is a fictionalized account of how Freemasons and other secret societies set up the world for takeover. Ancient writings foretell a ‘Shining One’ who emerges as the world’s prophet. A murder of a Most Worshipful mason resembles a secret oath. A cop gets too close to solving the crime. Paranoid preppers go underground, preparing for war.

Headlines such as the Norway massacre, meltdown of the European Union, unscrupulous media, animal die-offs, Middle Eastern unrest, and U.S. shrinking power make the plot relevant to present day. This book is an ode to Christians, Birthers, 2012ers, Truthers, preppers, and/or other conspiracy junkies who enjoy Dan Brown, Jesse Ventura, Brad Meltzer, Alex Jones, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. A sequel will soon be available.

I don't usually read these types of books, but I am glad that I read this one! It was full of twists and turns and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book.

While this is a work of fiction, you can just imagine some of the events happening in real life. Especially with the 'preppers' because there are shows that have proven they're out there!!

I really liked how completely chaotic (in a good day) this story could get. I loved the conspiracy theories and all the different POVs that are represented in this thrilling suspense novel. I plan on getting more into this genre of work, because it was really interesting!

This is a very captivating and unique story that needs to be read! You will be glad you did!

Review: The Last Sunset by Bob Atkinson, Orangeberry Tour

SUMMARY (Amazon)

Nuclear Armageddon blasts through time itself, dragging people from different eras into a turning point in history. The year… 1746. Around Fort William, the Scottish Highlanders are in revolt and the Redcoats are coming… But this time they will face more than flintlocks and Claymores. Can history be changed, or is the future doomed to witness… The Last Sunset?

This book was a page turner from the beginning. Bob Atkinson paints a beautiful picture of a country we don't often think about that much in an era that seems so forgotten.

This is a fast paced, very action packed novel and it will keep you in suspense the whole time you read it. I did get a little confused during some parts but then again, I've never claimed to be a history buff! Just pay close attention to details that way you won't end up re-reading pages.

And best yet, Bob throws in a little romance on top of everything else!

This story is unique and powerful and you will spend the rest of the day thinking about it once you close the back cover!

Review: Adrift in the Sound by Kate Campbell, Orangeberry Book Tour Stop

SUMMARY (Amazon)

Seattle street artist Lizette Karlson tries to pull herself together in 1973 and turns to the Franklin Street Dogs for help. This low-life softball team is a horrifying choice for a fragile spirit like Lizette, who's only trying to stay warm and make it through another rainy night.

The Dogs don't realize that while she's beautiful, talented, and a bit off-kilter—she's also cunning and very dangerous. Lizette wants to hook up with top-Dog, Rocket. He's fixed on next-door neighbor Sandy Shore, the little snake dancer who strips for soldiers coming home at the end of the Vietnam War. Everybody sleeps with everybody—whatever gets you through the night. It's a sexual free-for-all until Sandy turns up pregnant and the scene goes haywire.

After witnessing a murder and getting kicked out by the Dogs, Lizette is on the run again, crisscrossing Puget Sound. She hides out on Orcas Island and paints in a secluded cabin owned by her childhood friend Marian, a gifted midwife who recently inherited her family's ranch.

On the island, Lizette works with Lummi tribal leaders Poland and Abaya, who stick to their cultural values, guard their family secrets and offer her unconditional love. Along the way, Lizette sorts out crippling secrets in her own past, unwittingly makes a splash in the New York art world—and finds the only thing that really matters.

This debut novel by Kate Campbell has it all; love, murder, suspense and sex, drugs and rock n roll. It's a crazy mix of all kinds of chaos and in the end you close the book satisfied with a good dramatic story.

This book is recommended for older audiences. Teens should definitely not read this in my opinion! It's a little risque but we did go back in time to a very different period. I liked the characters especially Lizette. You really root for her throughout the whole story.

I've read so many futuristic novels, that reading this was a fresh change of pace. I wasn't a kid of the 70's, but I like reading about that setting. Kate gives a gritty and raw tale of a girl who is just trying to make it in the real world.

Review: Angel by Laura Lee, Orangeberry Book Tour Stop

SUMMARY (Amazon)

Since the loss of his lively, charming wife to cancer six years ago, minister Paul Tobit has been operating on autopilot, performing his religious duties by rote. Everything changes the day he enters the church lobby and encounters a radiant, luminous being lit from behind, breathtakingly beautiful and glowing with life. An angel. For a moment Paul is so moved by his vision that he is tempted to fall on his knees and pray.

Even after he regains his focus and realizes he simply met a flesh-and-blood young man, Paul cannot shake his sense of awe and wonder. He feels an instant and overwhelming attraction for the young man, which puzzles him even as it fills his thoughts and fires his feelings. Paul has no doubt that God has spoken to him through this vision, and Paul must determine what God is calling him to do.

Thus begins a journey that will inspire Paul's ministry but put him at odds with his church as he is forced to examine his deeply held beliefs and assumptions about himself, his community, and the nature of love.

This is one of the most intense books I've read in awhile. This is not an average love story in the least bit and just a warning, if you are not a fan of reading LGBT then I won't recommend this to you.

If you aren't bothered by that subject then you will love Laura Lee's tale of a man who is just trying to find who he is and deal with an expectant love and sticking by his faith.

Paul was a lovely character and very in depth and REAL. I love real characters, those who you feel may easily be someone you know in every day life. His faith is so important to him, and I love that in this book. But he is also dealing with feelings of the flesh which are confusing and new to him. It's such a complicated story that is truly one of a kind.
